How to Choose a Chesterfield Sofa — Complete Guide
Share
Choosing a Chesterfield sofa is not a decision you rush. These are pieces that last decades — built by hand, finished in real leather, and designed to become more beautiful with age. Get it right and you'll have furniture that anchors a room for the next thirty years. Get it wrong and you'll notice every day.
This guide covers everything you need to know before you buy — from sizes and leather types to seating options and what separates a genuinely handcrafted piece from a mass-produced imitation.
What Is a Chesterfield Sofa?
A Chesterfield sofa is defined by three features: deeply buttoned upholstery across the back and arms, scroll arms that sit at the same height as the back, and solid construction built to last. The design dates back to eighteenth century England — legend has it the fourth Earl of Chesterfield commissioned the original — and it has remained largely unchanged ever since.
That longevity is not accidental. The Chesterfield silhouette works across interior styles — traditional country homes, contemporary city apartments, period townhouses and commercial spaces. Very few pieces of furniture can make that claim honestly.
At Chesterfields Direct, every sofa is handmade in Lancashire, England, using the same traditional techniques that have been used since 1980. The frames are solid beech hardwood. The leather is sourced in the UK. Every button is hand-tied.
Step 1 — Choose the Right Size
Getting the size right is the single most important decision. A sofa that is too large overwhelms a room. One that is too small looks lost.
Two seater Chesterfield sofas typically measure between 140cm and 170cm wide. They work well in smaller living rooms, home offices, hallways and as a secondary seating option alongside a three seater suite. The Cambridge Chesterfield sofa is available as a two seater and is one of our most popular compact options.
Three seater Chesterfield sofas are the most commonly chosen size, typically between 190cm and 210cm wide. They seat three adults comfortably and suit most standard living rooms. Three seaters also anchor a room visually — the proportions of a full-size Chesterfield back and arms need space to breathe.
Four seater and larger options are available for larger rooms, open plan spaces and commercial environments. We have manufactured Chesterfield sofas to completely bespoke dimensions — including one measuring eleven metres in length for a commercial client.
Measuring your space:
Before ordering, measure the room and consider:
- The sofa width plus at least 60cm clearance on each side
- Depth from the wall — Chesterfields typically run 85-95cm deep
- Door and hallway widths for delivery access
- How the sofa relates to other furniture in the room
If you are unsure, our sofa buying guide has detailed guidance on measuring and sizing.
Step 2 — Choose Your Leather Type
The leather you choose will define how the sofa looks, feels and ages. At Chesterfields Direct we offer four main leather ranges, each with distinct characteristics.
Traditional Antique Leather
Our most popular range. This is a two-toned antique finish leather — rich, warm and deeply characterful. It develops a natural patina over time, becoming more beautiful with use rather than less. If you want the classic Chesterfield look that you recognise from gentlemen's clubs, libraries and period dramas, this is the leather.
Available in a range of warm tones including tan, chestnut, brown, hazelnut and red.
Full Grain Windsor Leather
A matt plain finish leather available in a wider range of colours including contemporary options. If you want a Chesterfield that works in a more modern interior, Windsor leather gives you the traditional silhouette with a cleaner, less distressed surface. It is also a highly durable full grain leather that wears well over time.
Superior Old English Leather
A semi-aniline natural distressed finish with beautiful variation in tone and texture. When the leather is stretched across the buttoning, the variation in shading becomes even more pronounced — creating a natural, organic look that no two sofas share. This is the leather for buyers who want something that looks genuinely aged and individual from day one.
Vintage Cracked Leather
A heavily weathered finish that gives the appearance of a sofa that has lived a long and characterful life. The cracked surface texture is deliberate and consistent. If you want a sofa with maximum character and a worn-in look, this is the one.

Step 3 — Choose Your Colour
Leather colour is personal, but some colours consistently outperform others in real homes.
Browns, tans and chestnuts are the most popular choices. They work with almost any colour scheme, age gracefully and look equally good in traditional and contemporary rooms.
Antique tan is our single most popular colour — a warm mid-tone that suits natural wood floors, neutral walls and most fabric combinations.
Dark browns and oxblood reds are classic Chesterfield colours that look particularly striking in rooms with dark wood furniture, green walls or traditional interiors.
Green, grey and navy work beautifully in more contemporary settings where you want the Chesterfield silhouette without the traditional colour palette.
A note on colour in different lighting:
Leather looks different in natural daylight, tungsten light and LED light. This is why ordering swatches before you buy matters. A colour that looks rich and warm in photographs can appear quite different under your specific room lighting. Our free sample service exists specifically for this reason.
Step 4 — Choose Your Seating Type
Chesterfield sofas are available with different seating constructions depending on the model.
Fixed seat sofas have a single continuous seat cushion built into the frame. They tend to be firmer and more structured — better for sitting upright and for formal rooms. They also hold their shape exceptionally well over time.
Cushioned seat sofas have separate seat cushions that sit within the frame. They are generally softer and more relaxed — better for lounging and for rooms where comfort is the priority.
Neither is objectively better. It comes down to how you use the sofa and what kind of seating you prefer.
Step 5 — Consider Bespoke Options
Because Chesterfields Direct manufactures all furniture in-house in Lancashire, we are able to accommodate a wide range of bespoke requests. This includes:
- Custom dimensions — wider, deeper, taller or shorter than standard sizes
- Custom cushion specifications — firmer or softer seat cushions
- Custom arm heights — adjusting proportions for specific room requirements
- Customer-supplied fabric — if you prefer a fabric finish rather than leather (subject to fire regulation compliance)
If you have a specific requirement that standard sizes do not meet, contact our sales team to discuss what is possible.
Step 6 — Understand Delivery and Lead Times
Most Chesterfields Direct sofas are handmade to order. Standard lead times for UK delivery are four to eight weeks from order confirmation, depending on the model and current production schedules.
If you need a sofa sooner, we carry a range of ready-made stock items available for faster delivery. These are fully finished sofas at discounted prices — worth checking if your timescale is tight.
We deliver throughout mainland UK and arrange weekly international shipments to Europe, the USA, Asia and beyond. Full details are on our worldwide delivery page.
What to Look For in a Quality Chesterfield
Not all Chesterfield sofas are made equally. Here is what separates a genuinely well-made piece from an imitation:
Frame construction — a quality Chesterfield uses a solid hardwood frame, typically beech. At Chesterfields Direct we offer a five-year frame guarantee as a reflection of this. Avoid sofas with frames described as engineered wood or plywood — they will not last.
Button quality — the button tufting on a real Chesterfield is hand-tied, with each button pulled through the upholstery and secured at the back. Machine-finished buttoning is faster but visually inferior and less durable.
Leather grade — genuine full-grain or semi-aniline leather is used on quality pieces. Bonded leather, PU leather and bi-cast leather are all imitations that wear badly, peel and crack within a few years.
Nailhead detailing — traditional Chesterfields use individual brass or antique nailheads applied by hand. Strip nailing is faster and cheaper but looks it.
Weight — a well-constructed Chesterfield is heavy. The frame, webbing, coil springs and leather all contribute to significant weight. If a sofa feels light, that is usually because corners have been cut somewhere.
Caring for Your Chesterfield Sofa
Leather is one of the most practical upholstery materials for everyday use. Basic care is simple:
- Wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth for routine cleaning
- Apply a suitable leather conditioner every six to twelve months to prevent drying
- Keep out of direct sunlight where possible — prolonged exposure can fade and dry leather
- Address spills quickly with a clean dry cloth — blot rather than rub
Full leather care guidance by leather type is available on our leather care page.
